Joden Girl
Baubles, Bling and Curious Things
A symbol of new beginnings, the dragonfly is a popular subject in jewelry. Perhaps the most famous pieces were created in the Art Nouveau era, from 1890-1910. René Lalique elevated this ethereal creature to extraordinary heights. A true master jeweler, Lalique romanticized the dragonfly by painstakingly crafting high karat gold skeletons that were enhanced with polychrome plique-à-jour enamel combined with the finest gemstones. In the years since, many have tried to capture even a hint of the magic created by Lalique. Today, we have one such example.

A modern interpretation of the dragonfly, this figural brooch is made from 18*karat white gold. Simple lines form the voluptuous curves of each wing and the softly arched body. Every bit of this whimsical insect is set with bright round diamonds. There ones highlighting the wings are tiny and set with prongs, while the ones along the length of the body are much larger and bezel set. Numbering one hundred and nineteen, these sparklers have a combined weight of 2.00 carats!

Peep the fineness mark on the back side of the brooch, guaranteeing the quality of this modern make. With a wingspan of 2.5 inches, the dragonfly offers real presence. Our insect doesn’t have enamel wings like Lalique’s creatures,; instead, the space inside each shapely appendage allows the underlying fabric to show through. It becomes a part of whatever you’re wearing… a hound’s tooth lapel, a denim jacket or a cabled sweater. Imagine it fastened to your shoulder, cuff or pocket.

Although our brooch doesn’t offer the mystique of a Lalique dragonfly, it does have a charm all it’s own. Moderately priced at $2,500.00, it could become your signature piece. With the comeback of the brooch, I find myself wondering what you think about this piece? Would you wear it proudly or would it linger in the bottom of your jewelry armoire? Is it hot? Or not?
