What’s New – Volume 53

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

One of the most underrated periods in jewelry is the Retro era.  Customers drool over the intricate designs of the Edwardian and Art Deco years.  Victorian gold earrings are hot items along with a recent spike in Mid Century Modern pieces.  Requests for 1940’s jewelry are few and far between.

Encompassing the late 1930’s and the 1940’s, the Retro period coincided directly with World War II.  The war had a huge impact on the jewelry industry.  Platinum was scarce, and most gold was mixed with larger amounts of alloys to make it go farther.  This resulted in lower karat gold and a surge in the production and popularity of rose gold (copper was the primary alloy).  Eerily similar to the mindset of today, consumers in the Retro era sought financial stability by investing in precious metals and high quality gemstones as opposed to paper currency.

Today’s trend toward conversion jewelry and re-imagining out-of-date styles is yet another commonality with the Retro years.  The war efforts continued to affect the availability of supplies forcing jewelry connoisseurs to get creative with whatever was at hand.  When diamonds became scarce, colored stones were a natural addition.

Tiffany and Co. was already a household name in the 1940’s.  Occasionally they teamed up with other fine manufacturers to forge even more fabulous fashions.  One such partner was Weinman Brothers.  This firm was established in New York City in 1912 by David and Sam Weinman.  The collaborations of these two firms are rare, occasionally popping up in popular online marketplaces like 1st Dibbs.

This stellar Retro brooch screams quality.  It’s stylish and elegant with a great holiday feel about it.  And although it is NOT a Tiffany piece, it does feature three distinct hallmarks… including a crisp WB.  Reminiscent of ribbon curls, this festive brooch centers on an asymmetrical three-looped bow.  The platinum and 18-karat yellow gold bow is pierced by a singular floral spray.  Multiple setting techniques have been employed within this unique find including prong, bead and bright as well as channel setting.

Nineteen square-cut rubies are finely set within one tail while a perfectly round cabochon ruby marks the center of the flower.  These twenty gems have a combined weight of approximately 3.85 carats.  There are forty-three diamonds – some Old European cuts, a few Modern European cuts and even one Old Mine Cut.  With a total weight of 1.75 carats, this unusual combination of diamond cuts could have been a re-imagined creation.  We can make conjectures, but this brooch isn’t talking!  Meticulously made with the finest quality metals and gems, this signed piece is the latest arrival in our estate department and is available now for $4,500.00.

Getting Personal with the Personnel – Volume Eight

Debbie Miles Master Jeweler

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Insider Information

With her two-year anniversary just around the corner, she’s the newest employee at Joden Jewelers.  Sass and sarcasm are her brand…  and pair perfectly with her stylish silver spikes.  With more than thirty years of experience at the bench, this feisty Italian mama is a master of the torch and a maestro in the kitchen.  From beautifully handcrafted wire-wraps to homemade beef enchiladas, she is full of surprises.  She gives a hug that can glue all your broken pieces back together, meet Debbie!

Having previously worked with all modern jewelry, Debbie has truly embraced the experience of repairing and restoring antique jewelry.  In fact, holding an 18th-century treasure in her hand all the while knowing it was handmade hundreds of years ago is her biggest accomplishment at Joden.

These photos showcase just a handful of the conversions that Debbie has created for us.  Dana and I were thrilled to discover that not only does she have an eye for design, she LOVES upcycling as much as we do.  She fully embraced the trend and has often added her own spin.  Request an appointment with Debbie to re-imagine and old piece or create something entirely new.  An in-house jeweler is a priceless asset; we are doubly blessed to have two full-time bench jewelers.  The experience of having one of those master craftsman be a woman has added a valuable element to our team that is as beneficial as it is fun!  Debbie is the very thing we never knew we needed but are so lucky to have.

Debbie is definitely a modern girl – preferring the look of clean lines and simple, elegant designs.  And although she is not a Victorian virgin, her experience and exposure to antique jewelry was limited.  Over the last two years, she has developed a deep appreciation for the skill and precise technique required to create these vintage visions… Debbie has even come to like some of them, but not all.  In fact, when I asked her what her least favorite piece in our inventory was, she named an entire genre.

Micromosaic.  This centuries old style involves tiny pieces of ceramic (called tessarae) that are inlaid to create a picture.  Debbie is in awe of the talent and time involved in making each of these miniature masterpieces, aesthetically speaking – they just aren’t her jam.  As I said, she’s a modern girl.

In fact, this ring is her favorite piece…  one that she designed and fabricated for herself.  Made from platinum, 14-karat yellow and 14-karat white gold, this straightforward solitaire is the epitome of sophisticated style.  With a .87 carat round brilliant diamond bezel set between a pair of straight parallel prongs seated at 9 and 3 o’clock, this unique setting shows off the center stone to perfection.  And while this beauty isn’t available – you can meet with Debbie to design one of your own.

Aside from her career, the things that are most important to Debbie are some of my favorite F-words too…  faith, family and food!  When the weather is right, you can find Debbie at her happy place – an envious riverfront property, a little piece of heaven on earth.  Whether she’s foraging for wild mushrooms, grilling up the perfect dinner or floating down the Allegheny… you can bet that Debbie is doing it with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.

If you’re craving a pop of color, this latest addition to our estate department is the perfect treat.  Made from 18-karat yellow gold, this band has so much to offer.  Spanning the top half of the ring are rectangular blue sapphires.  Bright in color, these twelve gems have a combined weight of 2.00 carats.  They are channel set between four rows of pavé-set round brilliant diamonds.  These forty-four diamonds add 1.00 carat of dazzling sparkle to this eye-catching band.

This ring plays well with others but is also more than capable of standing on its own.  Relatively low profile and silky smooth on the finger, this band is comfortable and a joy to wear.  As I write this, I am watching the light bounce off of each stone…  I’m wearing it, of course.

It has real presence on the hand without being ostentatious.  If you love the classic combination of blue sapphires, colorless diamonds and high karat gold…  this is the piece for you.  Check it on in the store today.  It’s going to be on our website soon for just $1900.00.  If it lasts that long!
