What’s New – Volume 68

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

Amber jewelry is often requested at Joden, but unfortunately, it’s not something that we have a lot of (if any) in our inventory.  It’s surprising considering that we often joke about having everything here. Somewhere.  So, when this bracelet came in, I grabbed it.

Aesthetically it appeals to me on multiple levels.  Comprised of sterling silver, this bracelet measures 7.5 inches in length and half an inch in width.  It’s the perfect size – not dainty, but also not chunky.  Sturdy construction ensures that the piece is wearable; it has great presence on the arm.

It showcases seven cabochon rounds of cherry colored amber, dubbed for it’s deep hue.  Darker, richer tones of the organic gem are a result of the extreme temperature and pressure that the fossilized tree sap was exposed to while buried underground.  I love the floral motif incorporated into the structure of the bracelet.  Each shimmery stone is accented by a pair of three dimensional daisies and four gently contoured leaves.

Daisies are my favorite posie and are also the birth flower for the month of April.  It’s the most cheerful bracelet – it makes me smile just by looking at it.  When I flipped it over to admire the closed back construction, I discovered several crisp hallmarks.

Etched in four lines, it reads “Sterling, Denmark, N.E. From, 925 S”.  With just the tiniest bit of research, I was able to discover that our bracelet was made from sterling silver in Denmark during the late Midcentury by Neils Erik From.  He opened his workshop in 1931 at just 23 years old.  For the next forty years, Mr. From became one of the most celebrated artists of Danish origin.  Much of his work was inspired by nature and featured semi-precious gems.  There are other nearly identical bracelets available on the web for upwards of $975.00…  ours is available for just $625.00.  It’s perfect for spring.  Make it yours today.

His and Hers – Volume Eight

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and Complementary Rings

I love vintage wedding bands, especially pairs of bands… his and hers.  The more worn they are, the better I like them.  When a ring is worn day in and day out, it develops a patina that tells the most beautiful story.  Every scratch and scuff is a testament to a life well-lived and of course, well loved.  Most wedding bands (those with no stones) are designed for daily wear.  Constructed to endure everything from manual labor to washing dishes, these bands have much to say.  They are perhaps the most quintessential symbol of a promise, the ultimate commitment.

They say “I am yours and you are mine,” forsaking all others for as long as we both shall live.  Those words are powerful maybe even more so than “I love you.”  This pair of vintage bands may not be a visual match – but they are undoubtedly a team.

The ladies ring is made from platinum, measures just 1.7mm wide and is a size five.  It’s engraved on the inside with two sets of initials.  Although faint and very worn in spots, it appears to read “BCD to ARW 8-24-51”.  The mens band is made from 14-karat yellow gold, measures 3.7mm wide and is a size 9.  Inside, it is engraved in the reverse “ARW to BCD  8-24-51”.

Seventy-two years.  I don’t know who wore these rings.  I can see that they were treasured.  We have not refinished the surface nor did we remove the engraving from the inside…  although we could.  These rings could be high polished to a pristine shine and those precious letters could be obliterated.  I simply couldn’t bear it – to erase this love story would be a crime.

On one hand it saddens me that they’re here, in our inventory instead of being cherished by a child or grandchild.  On the other hand, I am exciting at the prospect of them having a second owner who will love them as much as the first.  We have priced them as a pair, and don’t want to separate them.  If you are his and he is yours, make these bands yours for just $575.00.

What’s New – Volume 67

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

Art Nouveau… these two words translate to mean new art, or a new style.  The years from 1890-1910 have been dubbed the Art Nouveau period.  Offering a more natural aesthetic, the era was a breath of fresh air after the Victorian years.

Telltale characteristics of Art Nouveau jewelry nearly always include curving, sinuous lines.  This came to be known as the whiplash line.  It suggested natural, organic movement.  Whether it be in the soft waves of a woman’s hair or the botanical beauty of floral vines – the whiplash line defined the ultra feminine vibe of the time.

This stunning necklace made from the rich warm tones of 14-karat yellow gold features a curvaceous center.  Twin loops form the structure which hold the entire piece together.  Fringe-like dangles protrude from the midpoint and continue at regular intervals.

Each one showcases a deep purple round amethyst gemstone and a unique natural freshwater pearl.  These seven strands move enticingly with the body, fulfilling the Art Nouveau fantasy and bringing the overall design to life.  Art Nouveau style offers voluptuous curves paired with deeply saturated gems and jewels.  It’s womanly.  It’s lovely.  It’s available.  Make it yours for just $1,850.00.
