What’s New – Volume 13

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and The Latest Things

Fantastical.  This week’s latest find is spectacularly over the top.  An inspiring spray of 18 karat yellow gold and platinum feathers, it reminds me of a phoenix.  This mythical bird is the physical representation of resilience.  Rumored to live at least 500 years, when the phoenix reaches the end of its life, it makes a nest and sets it on fire.  This remarkable creature is completely consumed by the flames.  Finally, out of those same flames, a new phoenix is born.

Strikingly beautiful, this pairing offers a bold silhouette.  Measuring almost three inches tall, this brooch is quite sizable.  The body is comprised of fourteen 18 karat yellow gold textured feathers that are accented with marquise-shaped diamond trim.  An additional five feathers create the tail plumage, these constructed of platinum and diamonds.

The earrings complement the design of the brooch, each one presenting a fan of six golden feathers and diamond trim.  Between both pieces, there are seventeen marquise diamonds and sixty-four round diamonds with a combined total weight of 3.25 carats.

Shown here, you can see that these are true statement pieces.  Made in the 1960’s or 1970’s during the Mid Century Modern period, the craftsmanship is superb.  The pair is priced at $6,750.00.

Customers often remark that they have nowhere to wear pieces like this…  many joke that these are bit too much for the grocery store.  While I agree that I probably wouldn’t pin this brooch to my coat before heading to the supermarket…  part of me says “Why not!”  Rather than allow your most prized possessions to collect dust in the bottom of your safe or jewelry armoire, wear them – even if it’s only to the living room!

Flowers and Friends

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Happy Things

“Make new friends, but keep the old.  One is silver and the other is gold.”

Working retail is a unique experience.  We are privileged to play a small part in some of the most momentous milestones in life.  So many occasions are celebrated with jewelry.  During the process of selecting the perfect piece, we bond with our clients.  Relationships are formed; friendships are made.  We have rejoiced over marriages, anniversaries, promotions, babies and birthdays.  And we have held hands and shared tears over broken engagements, divorces and the loss of a loved one.

Sometimes, customers just brighten your day.  They bring a smile to your face and can even renew your faith in humanity with a tiny act of kindness.  Our customers spoil us with heartfelt thank you notes of appreciation, homemade treats, and by telling everyone they know about this cool jewelry store they love.  At Christmastime, my friend (who started out as a customer) brought me a gift – the cutest pair of personalized tea towels.  I couldn’t resist the opportunity to showcase them…  they are the ideal background for this daisy duo.

If you’re a regular reader, you know that daisies are my absolute favorite flower.  My wedding band is a custom-made chain of diamond-trimmed daisies in platinum and gold.  So, it will come as no surprise that I am completely enchanted by this pin and matching earrings.  14 karat gold, in both rose and yellow shades combine with platinum to create these bright and cheerful jewels.  The brooch is bold, measuring over two inches from the tip of the petal to the end of the stem while the earrings are much smaller.  They’re about the size (and color) of a new penny.  Each of the eight petals are ribbed, giving a more realistic feel to these polished posies.

Nestled into the heart of each flower is a platinum pavé center.  A series of single cut diamonds add sparkle and shine.  There are forty diamonds in all for a combined total of approximately 1.00 carat.

These beauties radiate happiness, just like my friend.  Made in the 1940’s in the heart of the Retro period, they’re sold as a matched suite for just $2,250.00.  Every time you pin this brooch to your collar or clip the earrings onto your lobe, you’ll smile.  And each time I reach for one of my towels, I will smile and think of my friend.
