What’s New – Volume 85

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

“Oh, man in the moon, send an evening star to wink at my dreary eyes,

and I shall make a wish for a peaceful world that spins with no more lies.

Oh, man in the moon, send the night’s cool breeze to lull my leery heart,

and I shall cast my fears to the wind with ease, and watch them all depart.

Oh, man in the moon, send the sandman’s dust to rest my weary soul,

and I shall slumber in happy dreams until morning bells do toll.”

– Richelle E. Goodrich

As I read the words of this wistful poem, they struck a chord deep within my soul.  These were the very words that came to mind when I first laid eyes on this antique pocket watch.  Made entirely of 18-karat yellow gold, this hunter-faced beauty depicts a rosy-cheeked cherub swinging from the uppermost tip of a crescent moon.

There was quite a lot of interest in the lunar cycle in the early 20th century.  The mystique that surrounded it inspired the creation of jewelry that featured the man in the moon…  like this watch.  Most likely worn by a woman, this piece is a size 6s – it measures just under 35mm.

The white porcelain dial of the timepiece reads “American Waltham” with Roman Numeral markers.  It also showcases a natural second hand in place of the VI.  The hour and minute hand offer a beautiful blue hue against the otherwise stark face.  The manual movement winds perfectly allowing the watch to keep accurate time.

The outer edge has a wonderful engraved pattern.  This textured surface is juxtaposed with the otherwise high-polished sheen of the case.  The moon itself is etched into the gold, with a graduated series of fourteen rose-cut diamonds forming the graceful crescent shape.  Pastel yellowish-green enamel brings the serene expression of the man in the moon to life.  A delicate pair of wings flutter from the back of a chestnut-haired cherub.  Wearing nothing more than a mauve wrap – she swings playfully from the tip of the moon.

This Art Nouveau beauty is in excellent working order.  Full of charm and whimsy – this pocket watch has captured our hearts.  Available now for just $2,450.00.  Usher in daylight savings time in style with this antique gem.
