“Let us live like flowers, wild and beautiful and drenched in sun.”  -Ellen Everett

What an image-  wild, beautiful and drenched in sun!  It’s the most perfect way to describe this week’s featured piece.  Bearing the mark 9999 on the under side of the rounded contour of the band, this engaging jewel is made entirely of 24-karat gold.  That’s pure gold – no alloys or other metals – and it’s glorious.  The color is more than buttery (a term often used to describe 18-karat);  it’s deeply saturated with a glow like nothing else.  The luster of pure gold is hypnotic and it never fades – it’s forever drenched in sunlight.

Continually captivated by flowers of every kind, I was immediately drawn to this oversize blossom.  Measuring nearly an inch across, this five-petaled posy exudes joy.  Sitting at a size 7.25, it’s quite comfortable on the middle finger of my right hand.  The band offers a sturdy width – over a quarter of an inch at the shoulder and tapering to an eighth of an inch at the back.  High karat gold is quite soft and ductile which makes this heavier shank not just a feature but also an important function that makes the ring wearable.

Each of the five petals has a raised, high-polished edge – as it reached the center of the flower, it turns into a prong that holds the center stone. The surface of the petals offer a light texture (perhaps sandblasted) and is veined with deep grooves that provide an authentic, lifelike feel.  Nestled in the center is a striking blue turquoise.  This 11mm round gem has a smooth surface and strong consistent color.  With a glossy surface and delightful greenish-blue hue – this beauty completes the ring to perfection.

In the United States, 10, 14, and 18-karat gold jewelry is manufactured regularly – 24-karat is a rarity.  However, it is the norm in India, China and the Middle East.  It is believed to bring good luck.  With a color unlike any other, it is readily recognized and has been used as currency all over the world for centuries.  Additionally, the flower is a symbol of prosperity – this one is on our site for just $1,950.00.  The combination of the two meanings (24-karat = good luck and the flower = prosperity), the wearer of this ring is destined for happiness….  and a life that is wild, beautiful and sun drenched.

Delightfully Debatable

Baubles, Bling and a Blooming Ring

Today’s featured piece has turned into a bit of a mystery.  I loved it at first sight, which is no great surprise considering that it’s a flower.  I’m a sucker for a pretty posy.  Oftentimes, when I find something that I like, I keep it on my desk….  giving me the opportunity to test drive it.  I can try it on, even wear it for a day or more; it allows me to get a real feel for it without buying it.  It’s a perk of the job, and it helps prevent impulse purchases (especially if you’re a lover of retail therapy, like me).

Sometimes those pieces go back to wherever I found them.  Sometimes, they become mine.    And sometimes they end up here…

This ring is a unique find.  Incredibly lifelike, a three dimensional flower sits atop a twisted double rope band.  There are no hallmarks on the ring, however by using our electronic metal analyzer, I was able to determine that the entire top is made from 18-karat yellow gold while the bottom is 14-karat.  The blossom itself is beautifully made with nineteen separate petals.  Each one features a hand-textured surface and a softly ruffled edge.  It has a romantic vintage vibe that is absolutely charming.

The band seems to be more modern and not as fine.  It’s possible that it’s a marriage, joining together a pendant (or pin?) with a twisted band to create one ring.  It’s also quite small, a size 3.  Sitting on my pinky, the flower spans from one knuckle to the next.  One round diamond winks from the center and a second diamond dangles from an outer petal.  With a total weight of approximately .30 carat, these gems add sparkle and a hint of whimsy.

Initially, I thought it was a rose.  But as I sat down to write…  I wasn’t sure.  I consulted Google – after which, I pondered the possibility of a peony.  With those two choices in mind – I asked Dana.  She is team peony.  Still on the fence, I went back to Google, which added a more specific possibility…  the English Garden Rose.

Although this ring seems to present more questions than answers, one thing is certain.  It’s lovely and so much fun!  Flowers are one of natures most delicate beauties and have inspired jewelers for centuries.  Available now for just $600, this botanical blossom offers enduring elegance.  Check out our Instagram story and tell us what you think!

What’s New – Volume 50

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

With the once green trees transforming into cascades of crimson, amber and golden leaves – it’s clear that autumn has arrived in Western Pennsylvania.  The air is crisp and clean.  The weather changes by the hour, often requiring a jacket in the morning.  But by the time I’m driving home from work, the windows are rolled down and the radio floats on the wind behind me as I buzz down the road.

Summer blossoms have faded…  even the once bright and cheerful sunflowers have been harvested.  Today is October 31st…  Halloween.  When combing through the jewels for the perfect piece for today – I discovered this beauty.

Showcasing the colors of fall, it shimmers in the sun.  With softly scalloped edges, this blossom holds a 1.02 carat natural fancy brown diamond in the middle.  Oval in shape, this gem is surrounded by sixty-two yellow diamonds that offer 1.26 carats of sparkle.  Further accenting the design are an additional twelve near colorless diamonds; set in the shoulders of the ring, these diamonds have a total weight of .22 carat.  If you’ve been doing mental math, that’s seventy-five diamonds that add up to 2.50 carats!

Made from 18-karat white and yellow gold, this ring is easily sized and ideal for daily wear.  It has been evaluated by the International Gemological Institute of America where it was appraised for $10,105.00.  Today, at Joden, we’re offering it for just $6500!  That’s no trick, it’s definitely a treat!  You don’t have to take my word for it, stop by and check it out for yourself.
