The Ties That Bind

Joden Girl

Baubles and Bling – It’s a family thing!

These bright and colorful earrings are an integral part of a suite of jewelry recently acquired at Joden.  Like many parures, it is comprised of multiple pieces that can be disassembled and then reconfigured to create different looks.

The collection is ensconced in the original fitted leather case…  with the jewelers name carefully inscribed on the ivory satin lining.

Krausz Testverek – or Krausz Siblings – a jewelry store located in Budapest in the late 1800’s into the early 1900’s.  Like Joden, it was a family owned business and according to these lovely examples of advertising – they too specialized in antique jewelry.

Five individual components (a necklet, a brooch, a pair of earrings, a small drop pendant, and a connecting segment) are elaborately set with a multitude of color.  Foiled settings bring life to the square cut emeralds and peridot.  These gems are evenly spaced by lavish pops of pink tourmaline and white pearls.  Further enhancing the design is an intricate pattern of black, white, and blue enamel.

Here you can see each individual piece and then the necklace fully united.  So many possibilities – check it out on this video…

Perhaps you’re thinking that you don’t have anywhere to wear this – but let’s break it down.  Wear the earrings and brooch to work, add in the necklet for dinner out.  And for special occasions, clip it all together for an amazing statement necklace!  Fashion and function, you can’t go wrong.

Joe’s Special Box – Volume 4

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

Wow!  It’s hard to believe it’s already been a month since we started the “Joe’s Special Box” series.  I am excited to share this week’s selection with you – it’s a rarity for me…  an emerald piece that I adore.  Being a May baby, emerald is my birthstone – but I’m usually more of a sapphire girl.  Until today.  Until this necklace.

Everything about it is perfect.  I don’t have one single complaint.  This pendant dates back to the turn of the 20th century, making it late Edwardian or Early Art Deco.  It’s intricately crafted from platinum with a clever little-coiled wire heart motif at the top and bottom.  A singular emerald is set in east/west fashion across the base of the piece, with natural pearl and diamond accents.  It is simple elegance, and I love it!

Affordable pendants from this period are rare – this one is not to be missed.  Make it yours for just $1600.

High Maintenance?

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and Pristine Rings

A wedding band is the most significant piece of jewelry you will ever wear.  Most people are incredibly attached to their band; some never take it off.  Until they have to…  usually for sizing or repair.  I have had customers employ some bizarre tactics to get a too-small ring off, everything from slathering their finger with saliva to squirting some Windex on the ring to help it slide over the knuckle.  Occasionally, a ring is SO tight that we actually have to cut it off.  Imagine a tiny saw-blade zipping through these beautiful scrolls and swirls.

Wedding bands have evolved over the years – plain gold bands are no longer the norm.  Bands are often bedazzled with diamonds or gemstones like sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.  Sometimes they feature design techniques like a beaded milgrain edge, open filigree work, or a brushed satin finish, like each of these.

While these rings are crafted with care and designed for daily wear, they still need regular check-ups.  At Joden, we always recommend routine maintenance…  twice a year is a good rule of thumb.  Our team includes two master craftsman with over 75 years of combined experience.  Their savvy skills will keep your jewelry looking like new, even if it’s over 100 years old.
