What’s New – Volume 66

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

For a self-proclaimed sapphire lover, lately I have really been digging emeralds.  Not typically a fan of green – I am inexplicably drawn to the bright verdant hue.  It feels fresh and new.  Green is the color of spring – symbolizing life, fertility, and renewal.  It’s no surprise that Emerald is the birthstone for May… a month when flowers are beginning to bloom.  It’s also the gift of choice for a 55th wedding anniversary.

We recently acquired this vintage ring.  It’s classically beautiful, made in a traditional three-stone style.  Created entirely of 18-karat yellow gold, this ring looks and feels rich.  A half-bezel style setting encapsulates the pear mixed cut beryl center.  This gem weighs approximately 1.30 carats.  Featuring medium green tones, this stone is moderately included.  Inclusion in emeralds are like clouds in the sky…  they’re a natural part of the stone.

Flanking the center are a matched pair of marquise brilliant diamonds.  Together, these two stones offer .40 carat of sparkle.  They are near colorless with an average clarity grade of VS2-SI1.  On the hand, the ring has a time-honored charm all its own.  Stamped inside the shank of this beauty are a series of English hallmarks.

Priced at $4000, this dainty darling is available in our store now, and will be on our site later this week.  Simple and sweet, it would be an excellent choice for a right-hand ring or a non-traditional engagement ring. Whether you wear it on your left hand or right, this eye-catching ring will garner accolades and compliments from everyone who sees it!

What’s New – Volume 65

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

I’m a sucker for a three-stone ring.  I love everything about them, from the simplistic yet classic design to the deeply-rooted symbolism.  For more than two hundred years, this style has captured hearts.  However, in 2001, with a little bit of marketing genius, De Beers turned this popular configuration into a worldwide phenomenon.

“One stone for our past, one for the present, and one for our future.”

Those fourteen words spoke volumes.  One sentence payed homage to where the two of you have been, celebrated where you are and embraced where you’re going.  Who wouldn’t love that?  Most of these rings showcased three diamonds with the center stone being larger than the two side stones.  Occasionally, colored stones were added to change up the look, but the symbolism remained the same.

Featuring English hallmarks, this charming ring is the latest addition to our estate department.  One round diamond sits proudly in the center – it weighs approximately .65 carat.  It is flanked with a glorious pair of vibrant green emeralds.  Together they have a total weight of .64 carat.  By nature, emeralds are often pale in color with eye visible inclusions.  These gems are fine quality, displaying a deeply saturated kelly green hue with minimal inclusions.

Although the ring is petite in size, the bright color palette gives it a strong presence on the hand.  Emeralds are said to bring peace, harmony and domestic bliss.  It’s an ideal choice to pair with the strong symbolism of the three stone ring.  Both of these sentiments make it a perfect choice for an anniversary or even an engagement ring.  Completing the look are three tiny diamonds nestled into each shoulder.

Emeralds are predicted to be THE engagement stone of 2023.  Though I cringe a bit at the thought of wearing emeralds during day to day life…  I can’t help but admit that the romantic meaning is appealing.  If this three-stone is calling your name, hop on over to our website for more photos and additional details.  Priced at just $2,475.00, it’s available now.

Engaging Emeralds

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Emerald Rings

There are four precious stones…  diamond, sapphire, ruby and the emerald.  Often referred to as the king of jewels, emeralds have been sought after for centuries.  In more recent years, there has been an even greater surge in popularity for this deep green gem.

The four “C’s” are the backbone of diamond buying, however many people don’t realize that they’re every bit as critical in colored stones.  When applying those four key terms (color, clarity, cut and carat weight) to emeralds, connoisseurs and experts agree that color is the most important factor.  The finest stones offer a bluish green to true green hue with vivid saturation – not too dark and yet not too light.  In addition, top quality emeralds are highly transparent.  Eye visible inclusions are common in emeralds…  so, gems without visible inclusions are rare and command high prices.  Skilled cutters know exactly the right location and spacing of faceting as well as the perfect depth to bring out the most desirable color while still maintaining the largest possible carat weight.

Emeralds are predicted to be in vogue for engagement rings in 2023.  While I can absolutely understand the allure of having a non-traditional betrothal ring, I’m not certain that emerald is the best choice.  Measuring a 7.5 on the Moh’s scale, emerald is a hard stone and resists scratching.  However, it isn’t tough.  In fact, emerald is notoriously brittle…  especially those heavily included stones.

Whether it be an engagement ring or an occasional piece – there are some simple steps that can help maintain the condition and beauty of your jewelry.  Storing jewelry in separate pouches or compartments in your jewelry box is key.  I have a small dish that is a catchall for the pieces I wear every day and a separate larger box for everything else.  The first thing I do when I get home from work is take off my jewelry.  I avoid wearing it when I am cooking, cleaning or doing daily tasks.  It’s also a good idea to NOT wear jewelry when working outside, playing sports or going to the gym.

Fine jewelry should be professionally cleaned and checked twice a year.  At Joden, we have two master jewelers on hand nearly every day.  With a trained eye, a microscope and a few simple tools, they are able to access your pieces and tell you what (if anything) needs done to keep them in prime condition.  Nearly 90% of all emeralds are oil-treated, so they shouldn’t be left to soak in an ultrasonic machine.   Emeralds can be gently cleaned with mild soapy water.  Outside of your twice yearly check-ups, if you notice an issue with a piece of jewelry, it’s always best to have your jeweler take a look.

The latest addition to our estate department is an emerald lovers dream.  Made entirely of platinum, this ring showcases simple clean lines that accentuate the elongated shape of the center set.  Set in east/west fashion with four prongs is a 1.55 carat emerald-cut emerald.  The saturation and transparency of this emerald are excellent.  It’s nestled between four straight baguette diamonds that step down each shoulder.  These diamonds have a combined weight of approximately .60 carat.  Priced at just $3,750.00, this ring is available on our website.  Make it yours today – and maintain it’s beauty with regular visits to Joden!
