Baubles, Bling and Discounted Things

The turn of the 20th century was a magical time in the jewelry world.  Three unique periods collided to create some of the most iconic jewels of all time.  Technically, the Victorian era ended with the death of Queen Victoria on January 22, 1901 – however, her influence reached far into the 1900’s.  The Art Nouveau period has been recorded as the years between 1890-1910 – just two short decades, but arguably one of the most important periods.  Concurrently, the Edwardian era lasted from 1901-1910.  You don’t have to try to imagine the beauty that can come from three exemplary periods coming together, we can show you…

Utterly feminine, this small brooch exemplifies characteristics of the Victorian, Art Nouveau and Edwardian times.  The base of the piece is yellow gold that has been topped with a thin layer of platinum, a detail often seen in the very early 1900’s.  The platinum has been micro-set with sixty-four rose cut diamonds that offer .75 carat of twinkling sparkle.  This primitive cut was prevalent in the mid to late 1800’s.  The rough material was fashioned with a flat back and a faceted, rounded top.  Due to its resemblance to a flower, it was dubbed a “rose cut”.

Enclosed inside the diamond halo and protected with a thin, glass crystal is a whimsical painting of a young woman. These kinds of paintings and elaborate enamel works often featured the female form and were all the rage in the Art Nouveau period.  Enjoying a breezy day, she is having an afternoon dalliance with a pair of dragonflies.  Her scarf billows out behind her while her dress blows against her legs, gathering behind her.  Both of her arms are raised; her hands acting as a tether for the two kite-like dragonflies.  Like a great conductor, she is guiding the ethereal insects along a melodious gust of wind.

This brooch is in excellent condition, and has been part of our antique collection for quite some time, priced at $4500.00.  In our efforts to bring back the brooch, we are now offering it for just $2,950.00.  Already an antique, this beauty is sure to be a treasured family heirloom for generations yet to come.

Baubles, Bling and Edwardian Elegance

Whether you call it Edwardian or perhaps Belle Epoque, this ring is the epitome of elegance.  Measuring nearly an inch in length, it almost reaches from knuckle to knuckle on my hand.  The delicate shank is formed from a pair of 14 karat yellow gold wires… nestled together to form the band, then splitting to create a “Y” on each side of the ring.  Both arms of the “Y” are joined to the intricate frame that outlines the base of the design.

A small kite-shaped segment lies within those arms, the apex of it forging a bond with the parallel borders of the lacy structure.  The overall shape of the ring reminds me of a stained glass window, although the only color in this window is the crisp white platinum top layer and the warm yellow gold frame.  It’s classic Edwardian at it’s absolute finest.

Three bezel set Old Mine Cut diamonds create a line of vertical stations down the center of the ring.  These sparklers are ringed with concentric platinum wire circles.  The elongated outline is hand set with thirty additional Old Mine Cut diamonds – 1.00 carat in all.  It’s breathtakingly beautiful; striking the perfect balance between a bold size and incredibly fine detail.

The Edwardian era is the shortest period in jewelry beginning in 1901 and culminating with the end of Edward VII’s reign in 1910.  In just nine years, artisans produced some of the most iconic jewelry of the 20th century.  This gem is no exception, priced at $3,250.00 – it’s available on our site now.  You don’t have to take my word for it, check it out for yourself.

Edwardian Dreams

Baubles, Bling, and a Pearl Ring

La Belle Epoque…  The Beautiful Era – more commonly known as the Edwardian Period.  Named after King Edward in England, the years between 1901-1915 produced some of the most beautiful jewelry of the past 100 years.  These jewels took a nod from the graceful lines of Art Nouveau jewelry and combined it with the classic designs of decades gone by…  the result was stunning.  Primarily monochromatic; utilizing platinum, diamonds, and pearls – it was a luxurious delicacy that is still highly sought after today.

This little charmer is the epitome of Edwardian elegance.  With a warm yellow gold base, we can date the ring to pre-1903 (the invention of the oxyacetylene torch in 1903 allowed metal to be heated to much higher temperatures, paving the way for jewelry constructed completely from platinum.  This eliminated the need to lay platinum on top of gold – although, aesthetically speaking –  I love that crisp line created by layering the two metals).  The Art Nouveau influence is evident in the soft curving lines that create the shoulders of the ring… add in those killer Old Mine Cut diamonds and a natural pearl center, and we have the stuff Edwardian dreams are made of.  It’s available in our showroom now for just $2100.00.
