Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Curious Things

Lately, Dana and I have been obsessed with uranium glass rings.  When exposed to a black light, this unusual stone glows!  How cool is that?  Since we’ve sold nearly every uranium glass ring that we’ve found, we can only assume that you think it’s pretty darn cool, too.

Recently we discovered another ring in our collection that’s quite special.  At first glance, it simply looks like a 1990’s-style three-stone ring.  Made entirely of 18-karat yellow gold, this ring holds a 3.00 carat oval sapphire in the center.  Set in a half-bezel and exhibiting a periwinkle hue, this sapphire actually resembles a tanzanite.

A matched pair of round diamonds flank the center stone.  These two diamonds have a combined weight of 1.00 carat.  At a glance, it appears to be a simple, modern ring.  What you cannot see is that it has a secret to tell.  If you hold it under a blacklight, the sapphire center changes from blue to red!  It’s not a trick, it’s a color-changing sapphire.  This property is called pleochroism, and it’s incredibly rare.  Only a very small percentage of natural sapphires are color-changing.

Shown here, under incandescent light, the sapphire appears to be red.  The shift in colors is strong and incredible to behold.  It’s like having two rings in one!

While we’re completely captivated by the color-changing sapphire center, we just don’t know what to think about the setting.  Though the ring is from our estate department and is pre-owned – it appears to have never been worn.  It’s bold and strong, providing excellent protection for the gemstones held within.  Priced at $6,000.00, this ring is undeniably cool.  But is it pretty?  We can’t help but wonder what you think.  Is this ring hot?  Or not?
