This or That – Volume 18

Baubles, Bling and Heartfelt Things

The legacy of Elsa Peretti is a thing of beauty – it’s filled with dream jobs, accolades and accomplishments.  Although she was born in Italy and completed some of her studies there, she also studied abroad in Switzerland.  Early in her career, she taught French.  By the 1960’s and 70’s, she was modeling in New York City where she became a favorite Halstonette.  She frequented Studio 54 with friends that included Andy Warhol, Liza Minelli, Cher and Donald Trump.   During that time, Elsa also began designing her jewelry for fashion designers in Manhattan.  She loved working with silver.  Her organic, fluid designs elevated the metal from common to elegant.  After being featured in Vogue and having her own boutique in Bloomingdale’s; she was scooped up by one of the most iconic names in jewelry history… Tiffany & Co.

Peretti created pieces that were sensual and modern – her designs appealed to younger generations.  Elsa’s silver jewelry opened up a new price point for Tiffany, making it accessible for everyone.  She designed more than thirty collections for Tiffany and most styles were produced in gold as well as silver.  The Open Heart collection was one of her most successful lines and is still sought after today.

The style is effortless and chic – a stylized high-polished heart suspended from a dainty cable chain.  In the past few weeks, we purchased two!  Both are stunning.  The first is a large (36mm at the widest point) shimmery silver pendant.  Simply beautiful, it makes a statement.

It feels casual; something that you would wear with wide-leg linen pants and a loose tunic.  Priced at just $365.00, it’s sure to sell.  On the other end of the spectrum is an 18-karat yellow gold beauty dazzling with the brilliance of diamonds.

Smaller, this heart measures about 25mm.  The silhouette is the same, offering fluid lines and organic charm.  Sprinkled along the bottom are twenty-two round brilliant diamonds.  This hint of sparkle elevates the pendant.  Dress it up for evening appeal or dress it down for weekend fun.  This gem is priced at $4,000.00.  While there are no wrong choices here, I can’t help but wonder which one of these you would choose?  This simple silver heart or that diamond accented golden girl?  Or… perhaps you’re lucky enough to get both!

Baubles, Bling and A Collector’s Things

It’s no secret that Mid-Century-Modern design is the trend of the moment.  From sputnik light fixtures to womb chairs; everyone is looking back to create the inspiring style of today.  Post-war America saw an economic boom.  Dinner clubs were popular social venues – offering dancing and entertainment with dinner.  These clubs were true destinations, they were THE place to be on a Friday or Saturday night.  The fun started with cocktail hour and continued into the wee hours of the night.  Evening wear was essential; ladies decked themselves out from head to toe…  and doubled down on the jewelry.

Lush and luxurious, these bouquets were crafted from 18-karat yellow gold.  Each stem is an individual piece of stout wire that is capped with a golden cup.  Nestled into each one is a shimmering amethyst bead.  Deep violet in color, there are twenty-eight gems with a combined weight of at least 15.00 carats.  A small single-cut diamond crowns each purple gem, expertly held in place with four tiny prongs.  Combined, these diamonds offer .75 carats of sparkle.

Forming the leaves are six cabochon emeralds.  Oval in shape, these bright green stones have a total weight of 3.00 carats.  These petite pretties are mirror images of each other, meant to frame the face with a pop of color and the glimmer of gold.  Bouquet earrings were a popular style in the 1950’s; most were costume, made from rhinestones and gold-tone metal.  Our nosegays are anything but…  these earrings are finely crafted from precious metal and natural gemstones.  Any Mid-Century gal would have been proud to clip them onto her ears!  If you’re as charmed as we are, stop by our Grove City showroom where they’re available for just $4,500.00.

Gold… it’s the color of sunshine.  It warms to the touch and feels good when you put it on.  It’s a timeless classic and the picture of modernity at the same time.  Everyone is amping up their wardrobe game with a piece or two of golden elegance.  Earrings are a natural go-to for gifting.  They’re also perfect when you’re looking for a little pick-me-up for yourself.  Framing the face, and adding a little shine to your look is something that everyone can embrace.

Everyone has a pair of gold hoops.  Maybe you picked them up on your latest weekend away or maybe you snagged a fun pair on a last-minute Target run.  They’re an easy, every day look.  But sometimes, you want something that feels a little different; a style that is still simple, but offers a bit more visual appeal.  Recently acquired, these vintage post earrings are so fun.  A half-circle bead sits flush with the ear while a small sculpted gold piece dangles just below.  Looking very much like a fresh-baked croissant or bakery roll, these dangles have a story to tell.

The back of the earring is covered with hallmarks… 14K, Italy, Uno A Erre, Aurea.  The first two marks are self-explanatory; they tell us that the earrings were made in Italy of 14-karat yellow gold.  A quick Google search revealed that Aurea means golden.  That just leaves one more hallmark.  For more than ninety years, Unoaerre has been crafting some of Italy’s finest gold jewelry.  Interestingly, the name Unoaerre comes from the very first hallmark of the gold industry.  It was issued to Zucchi and Gori (the founding fathers of Unoaerre) in 1926; the mark was “1AR” – which evolved into the name of the company…  Uno A Erre or Unoaerre.  Today, the company is recognized throughout the world – distributing fine jewelry in forty different countries!

These earrings are the latest addition to our estate department.  They’re sure to add a hint of color and a bit of fun to your day.  Priced at just $350.00 – they won’t last long.
