Baubles, Bling, and Hard Stone Things

Pietra Dura – these Italian words mean “hard stone”…  and that is precisely what these beauties are.  Crafted in the late 1800’s with a matte black background and inlaid with elaborate interlocking pieces of semi precious stones, each one of these brooches is a masterpiece.

They are miniature puzzles, with precisely cut slices of agate, lapis lazuli, jasper, and chalcedony artfully arranged to create budding and fully bloomed floral majesty.  Artisans hand-cut and polished every single piece of stone to align perfectly with the next.  This decorative art form originated in Rome in the 1600’s but didn’t realize it’s full glory until two centuries later in Florence.

Many Pietra Dura pieces were sold as souvenirs once travel and touristy become popular at the end of the Victorian era.  Whether worn on a black velvet ribbon or pinned to a high-necked collar, women were crazy for these mosaic gems.  Romantic details like twisted rope borders and seed pearl trim were added to the golden frames to enhance their appeal.

A delicate pattern of tiny three-dimensional leaves and coiled wire stems encircle the border of this demi-parure.  It sits on a luxurious bed of rich red velvet, violet silk, and burnt orange leather  – the principle ingredients of the original fitted case.  This suite is comprised of a large brooch and a pair of dangle earrings.  Pink, blue, and white blossoms burst from the black marble plaques.  It’s truly remarkable and utterly feminine in the best possible way.

You don’t have to go to Italy to see these charmers.  You simply must come to Joden and discover this historical art form for yourself.

Joe’s Special Box – Volume 53

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

A symbol of change and transformation, the butterfly has been the subject of multiple art forms for centuries…  including these pieces from Van Gogh, Picasso, and Warhol, respectively.  Each one has inspired millions of people worldwide and is beautiful in its own rite.

Not only did this powerful representation of life influence painters, but also master craftsmen and jewelry firms like Shreve and Co. – the maker of this butterfly pin.  This delicate Edwardian brooch is the latest acquisition at Joden.  Made in classic Edwardian style (a yellow gold base with a layer of platinum on top) and set with thirty-five glistening Old Mine Cut diamonds, this tiny temptress has bewitched me.

Measuring just one inch from wing tip to wing tip, I love everything about it.  It’s size makes it so versatile – pin it to a scarf or a collar, perhaps to the cuff of your sleeve, or add it to the shoulder of any jacket for lifelike appeal.  It is sure to enchant anyone who sees it.  Moderately priced at $3980 – I bet you can guess where to find it!  That’s right, it lives in Joe’s Special Box…  at least for now.

Do You Prefer Three Leaves or Four?

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and Symbolic Things

Faith, hope, and love…  this is what the three leaves of a shamrock signify.  It’s the symbol of Ireland and has been for centuries.  It is not to be confused with a four-leaf clover, an uncommon variation of the three-leaf clover.  One in every 10,000 clovers will have the fourth leaf… the lucky charm.

This rosy 14 karat gold bangle is made in a classic bypass style, comprised of three bands on the top.  The center one has been hand turned to create a beautiful twisted effect.  The crowning glory of this otherwise simple piece is the shamrock.  This iconic shape, made from three heart-shaped leaves, is seated at a jaunty angle on top of the bangle.  Four rose cut diamonds have been fitted to the clover, adding the perfect amount of sparkle.  Priced at $1,700 – this bracelet is perfect for daily wear and would easily become a favorite in anyone’s wardrobe.

Pair it with one of these rings from Joe’s Special Box for an even more dazzling effect.  Remember these beauties from a few weeks ago?  Any of the three would be an ideal complement to the shamrock bangle.  With shared elements like vintage cut diamonds, and rosy gold – the common ground makes for a stellar style statement.  These pieces are available at Joden, where our motto continues to hold true…
